Subject Description

In this subject, students undertake supervised research and reading on traditional or contemporary Japan, or Japanese language, using Japanese language sources, such as books, journals, internet access, satellite television and newspapers. Students may also make use of Western language materials to develop an understanding of the different approaches and methodologies in the study of Japan, through a comparison of Japanese and Western language materials.

Generic Skills

  • acquire research skills through frequent and systematic use of the library and other information sources, the definition of areas of inquiry and familiarisation with research methods;

  • be able to think in theoretical and analytical terms through discussion, writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading and assignment completion.

Assessment

A research essay of 5000 words 100% (due at the end of semester). A hurdle requirement of a regular minimum fortnightly meetings with the supervisor.
