A 1-hour lecture and eight hours of classes including both computer and language laboratory study per week

Subject Description

This subject consolidates students' Japanese knowledge and enables them to communicate in Japanese using an appropriate politeness level and styles. Various styles of reading materials will be introduced. Students will learn a further 150 kanji (Chinese characters). Students are also introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture. Computer laboratory or language laboratory instruction will support the curriculum.

Generic Skills

  • gain skills in written communication through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • learn attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • gain skills in time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • gain skills in public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

Four vocabulary quizzes of 200 words 8% (due throughout the semester), a 30-minute listening test 10% (due at the end of semester), an 8-minute speaking test 12% (due mid-semester), a 500-word assignment 5% (due mid-semester), a team project assignment comprising a written report of 1200 words and a 10-minute oral presentation 20% (commencing mid-semester and due at end of semester) and a 2-hour final examination 45% (due during the examination period).
