Students must have completed two semesters of study of Chinese at the University of Melbourne in order to obtain credit. 110-029 Introductory Chinese 2B and 110-030 Spoken Introductory Chinese 2B, 110-161 Chinese 1B, 110-182 Standard Chinese 1B and 110-122 Spoken Standard Chinese 1B are the minimum levels required.

This subject is intended to provide an in-country study experience for those students who are unable to study overseas for the longer period of time required by the University's exchange programme. Students will experience Chinese culture and society at first hand while intensively practising their language skills.

• have an increased ability to function in an intercultural context;

• have greater knowledge of intercultural communication practices;

• have the adaptability to cope with a different learning regimen;

• have increased levels of cross-cultural awareness.

A 2-hour written examination 50% and a 20-minute oral presentation 50% (both due in the final week). Students are required to have a minimum of 90% class attendance and achieve a pass in all tests set by the host university.

These will be provided in China. All students are expected to buy their own dictionaries.
