Students who have completed 110-460, 110-461, 110-041, 110-042, 110-043, 110-044, 110-039 and 110-040 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

110-161 Chinese 1B or 110-029 Introductory Chinese 2B and 110-030 Spoken Introductory Chinese 2B or equivalent as determined by the coordinator.

This subject is an advanced unit introducing the techniques of Chinese newspaper analysis for fields such as politics, international affairs, intellectual debates etc. Students will use current reading materials to study a range of political affairs in the People's Republic of China. On completion of the subject students should be able to read news articles in Chinese with the aid of a dictionary; demonstrate a knowledge of issues of current importance for Chinese society; have an understanding of the function of news media in Chinese society; and develop analytical skills in dealing with Chinese material.

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion.

A translation exercise 500 words 20% (due mid-semester), an essay of 1500 words 20% (due in week 8) and a 2-hour final examination 60% (due during the examination period).
