110-180 Standard Chinese 1A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Corequisites

Students must be concurrently enrolled in 110-122 Standard Spoken Chinese 1B.

Subject Description

This is an accelerated subject for students who speak a dialect of Chinese and who have completed 110-180 Standard Chinese 1A. At the conclusion of this subject students should have reached approximately the same level as 110-029 Introductory Chinese 2B. They should have mastered the basic grammatical structures of Modern Standard Chinese, and have a vocabulary of approximately 1200 characters.

Generic Skills

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing.

Assessment

Homework 1000 words 20% (due weekly), short tests 30% (due in week 6 and week 10) and a 2-hour final examination 50% (due during the examination period).
