110-163 Introductory Chinese 3B

Students who have completed 110-134 Spoken Chinese 3B, 110-132 Modern Chinese Prose or 110-135 Chinese Composition and Correspondence are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

110-162 Introductory Chinese 3A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

This course builds on the knowledge already acquired by students in Chinese in 110-162 Introductory Chinese 3A. It will further develop the range of students' listening and speaking skills; expand their experience of Chinese prose styles; and improve their ability to communicate professionally in written Chinese.

• acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing.

Oral and listening comprehension class work 20% (due weekly in class), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (due at the end of semester), a 30- minute listening test 10% (due at the end of semester), a reading test 10% (due mid-semester), writing tests 15% (due in week 6 and week 10 in class), a 1-hour final exam 25% (due at the end of semester) and continuous class participation 10%.
