Students who have completed 110-131 Spoken Chinese 3A, 110-132 Modern Chinese Prose, or 110-135 Chinese Composition and Correspondence are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

Subject Description

This course builds on the knowledge already acquired by students in Chinese in Introductory Chinese 2B. Students should broaden their listening comprehension and speaking skills and gain confidence and independence in handling written Chinese language materials and in making the transition from textbook material to original Chinese texts.

Generic Skills

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing.

Assessment

An Oral and listening comprehension class work 20% (due weekly in class), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (due at the end of semester), a 30-minute listening test 10% (due at the end of semester), a reading test 10% (due mid-semester), writing tests 15% (due in week 6 and week 10 in class), a 1-hour final exam 25% (due at the end of semester) and continuous class participation 10%.
