Subject Description

This subject is for students who have completed a course of study in Chinese at secondary school level. In building on the knowledge students already have, particular attention will be paid to expanding vocabulary, ensuring a good grasp of the basic grammar of spoken Chinese, and developing reading, writing and oral/aural skills.

Generic Skills

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion.

Assessment

A 1-hour examination 30% (due during the examination period), a 30-minute listening comprehension test 20% (due during the examination period), a 10-minute oral test 20% (due during the examination period), fortnightly tests 10%, a composition test 10% (due at the end of semester) and continuous class participation 10%.
