110-143 Introductory Chinese 1A and 110-144 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Description

This subject is a course in elementary spoken Chinese to complement 110-145 Introductory Chinese 1B. Students should improve their pronunciation and further develop their listening comprehension and speaking skills.

Generic Skills

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion.

Assessment

A 30-minute listening comprehension test 40% (due during the examination period), a 5-minute oral test 50% (due during the examination period) and class participation 10%.
