110-143 Introductory Chinese 1A and 110-144 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Description

This subject is an introductory course in Chinese for students who have completed 110-143 Introductory Chinese 1A and 110-144 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1A. By the conclusion of this subject students should be able to speak with an acceptable standard of pronunciation, and read and write approximately 600 Chinese characters.

Generic Skills

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion.

Assessment

Two short tests 30% (one due mid-semester and one at the end of semester), a 2-hour final examination 60% (due during the examination period) and class participation 10%.
