Subject Description

In this subject students continue to develop language skills necessary to understanding authentic Indonesian language transmitted through a variety of popular and non-print media, eg. radio, television, film and the internet. Topics will cover a variety of current affairs in Indonesia, including gender and ethnic issues. Information accessed through these media will form the basis for critical discussion in Indonesian. Students will also produce a media project in Indonesian.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

Two oral tasks comprising a group and an individual 40% (students are to sign up for different weeks at the start of semester), two listening and comprehension tests 40% (due early semester and late semester), a 10-minute class presentation (due late semester) and continuous class participation 20%. Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examination.
