110-145 Introductory Chinese 1B and 110-146 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1B or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Description

This is a post-elementary subject in Chinese. By the end of this subject students should know 900 Chinese characters and should have a good grasp of basic grammatical structures.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion.

Assessment

A mid-semester test 20% (due mid-semester), a composition test 20% (due in the last week of semester), a final 2-hour exam 50% (due during the examination period) and ongoing class participation 10%.
