Subject Description

This is a specialised reading subject, with analysis of Roman Republican poetry, focusing on texts by such writers as Ennius, Naevius, and Lucilius. Advanced stylistic and thematic analysis of these texts will address issues such as the context of literary production in the Republican period; the range, nature and development of poetic genres and styles; the characteristics of Republican Latin; and the difficulties of interpreting fragmentary texts. Students who complete the subject should have reached an acceptable standard in translating and interpreting Latin texts, specifically Roman Republican poetry.

Assessment

Written work totalling 2000 words for 2nd/3rd year students and 3000 words for 4th year students and a 2-hour class test.
