Subject Description

This subject provides an introduction to painting in the Southern Netherlands (Flanders and Brabant) in the period 1400 to 1525. There will be a particular focus on the imagery of works of art in relation to patronage and to social and religious contexts in the cities of Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Leuven and Mechelen. Portraiture and landscape will also be included. The patronage of artists working in these cities by the dukes and duchesses of Burgundy, their courtiers and ministers, and also that of the merchants and bankers, will be considered in relation to the art market in the fifteenth century.
