107-221 The Epics of Homer

Formerly available as 107-102. Students who have completed 107-102 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject may be included in a major in English.

This subject focuses on the heroic epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey, and the cultural context in which they were created. Students, on completion of the subject, should have acquired an understanding of what is meant by Homeric 'epic' in its ancient literary context; have an appreciation of Homeric epic through the reading of primary texts; have developed an understanding of the principal critical approaches and cultural context of Homeric epic.

• possess effective written communication skills;

• have an understanding of social, ethical and cultural context.

A research essay of 2500 word 60% (due in week 8 of semester), an essay of 1500 words 30% (due during the examination period), and tutorial participation 10% (assessed throughout the semester).
