Subject Description

This subject teaches students to read Latin and covers the material of two semesters. It covers grammatical concepts and paradigms, sentence formation and translation and the reading of simple texts. The aim is for students to acquire the elements of syntax, grammar and vocabulary of Latin, sufficient to begin reading literary and non-literary texts. Completion of the subject will enable a student to enrol in Intermediate Latin.

Generic Skills

  • develop their critical thinking skills and attention to detail;

  • appreciate the communication conventions of another culture;

  • be able to think in theoretical terms.

Assessment

Written work totalling 8000 words comprising daily 10-minute class tests 10%, three 1-hour tests 60% (held during the semester) and a 2-hour exam 30% (at the end of semester). Students must complete the three 1-hour tests and the 2-hour exam in order to be eligible for final assessment.
