1. Objectives of the faculty

The general objectives of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences are:

1.1. Medicine

to preserve, refine and advance knowledge in basic and applied medical science, relevant to understanding, preventing and alleviating human disease;
to provide the highest quality undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in medicine and biomedical science; and
to contribute to leadership in the development of the community by effective interaction with groups outside the University.

1.2. Dentistry

to provide leadership in the refinement, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in relation to oral health;
to provide excellence in educational programs in order to prepare graduates who are competent to provide for the oral care needs of the community; and
to foster the involvement of the dental profession in relevant community groups.

1.3. Physiotherapy

to preserve, refine and advance knowledge in physiotherapy sciences relevant to the promotion and maintenance of health;
to achieve excellence in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in physiotherapy; and
to contribute to leadership in the development of the local and international community by effective interaction with the physiotherapy profession and other appropriate groups outside the University.

1.4. Behavioural science (psychology)

to preserve, refine and advance knowledge in basic and applied psychology;
to produce graduates with a comprehensive perspective of a broad range of areas of psychology and its place in the community; and
to train graduates to use scientific methods of investigation for the accumulation of professional knowledge.

1.5. Nursing

The School of Nursing:

provides nursing education high quality programs from undergraduate through to PhD;
develops programs with a clinical focus that are in tune with the educational needs and realities of the 21st century;
forges strong international teaching, practice and research collaborative links;
develops and maintains close liaison with clinical agencies;
provides unity, leadership and service through collaborative relationships with external and professional organisations, participation in public discourse, and continuing education programs;
is recognised nationally and internationally in areas of advanced clinical nursing research;
promotes evidence-based nursing to strengthen the practice-research nexus

1.6. Population health

to help educate undergraduates, postgraduates, clinicians in all sectors of the health care industry, scientists, professionals and leaders in population health;
to provide a translational bridge between new technology developments in genomics and proteomics through health services and social structures to the population whose health we aim to protect and promote; and
to inculcate a population health approach in all areas of health care and in the community where opportunities for disease and injury prevention exist (often through agencies and individuals outside the health system).

1.7. Rural health

to develop and deliver quality education and research activities for rural and Aboriginal people in a collaborative and cross-culturally sensitive manner;
to develop, evaluate and support the implementation of innovative and effective strategies to enhance the recruitment, retention, and quality of rural and Aboriginal health workforces;
to develop, evaluate and support the implementation of innovative and effective methods of quality health service delivery for rural and Aboriginal people;
to develop, evaluate and support the implementation of innovative and effective ecological methods of improving the health and well being of rural and Aboriginal people; and
to act as catalyst, support and advocate for rural and Aboriginal communities.
