Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts who wish to undertake a secondary teaching qualification and who have completed at least one year of the Bachelor of Arts can apply to transfer to the combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching, a four-year full-time (or approved equivalent) program. The combined course comprises a total of 400 points with 250 points undertaken in the Faculty of Arts and 150 points in the Faculty of Education. The first two years of the combined course are devoted to arts subjects, with Bachelor of Teaching subjects normally undertaken in third and fourth year.
The normal pattern of study is as follows:
|
Note:
students must have completed a minimum of 200 points in arts subjects before being able to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching subjects;
students who are completing a diploma (such as the Diploma in Music (Practical)) concurrently with the Bachelor of Arts must have completed a minimum of 200 points in the arts/diploma course and have undertaken sufficient studies in their two chosen teaching areas to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching component of the combined course;
if students complete some level-2 arts subjects in year 1, they will be able to do additional level 2 or level-3 subjects in subsequent years;
students may take one Bachelor Teaching subject in year 2, allowing them to take 25 points of arts subjects in year 3.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that s/he meets the requirements of the combined BA/BTeach by enrolling in the currect number of subjects at the appropriate year level and within the rules outlined in this Handbook.
Bachelor of Teaching students complete a minimum of 45 days of satisfactory supervised practice teaching in schools plus an extended internship in final year. Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching students should note that they are expected to meet their practicum commitments where these may occur in semester breaks at the same time as some arts subjects are offered on an intensive basis.
In 2005, students in year 3 of the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching course begin classes in the week beginning 21 February.
Students in year 4 of the course begin a School Experience Placement block in the week beginning 7 February.
Details of semester dates and school experience placements are available from the Melbourne Education Student Centre - Professional Practice.
Students who wish to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree undertake the additional honours year as a final fifth year after fourth year of the combined program.
Students who wish to complete the Bachelor of Teaching (Honours) within third and fourth year will be able to apply in the same way as all other Bachelor of Teaching students.
Deferral of a place in the combined course is not possible.
Part-time studies are available in the first two years of the combined course (the arts component) but not in third and fourth year (the Bachelor of Teaching component).
Students must initially gain admission to the Bachelor of Arts through the normal VTAC processes. At the end of first year of the Bachelor of Arts, students who have completed at least 87.5 points can apply for the combined course by completing an internal transfer form on the University's Student Information System (SIS) at https://sis.unimelb.edu.au/. Admission to the combined course is also possible after second year, provided that the prerequisite subjects for two teaching areas have been completed.
Selection will be based on academic merit and will be conditional upon appropriate selection of later year arts subjects to meet prerequisites for the student's intended teaching areas.
