European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed first-year European studies.

In this subject the concept of 'transterritorial Hellenism' will be discussed by way of an imaginary journey through the cities of Thessaloniki, Izmir, Alexandria, Paris, London, New York and Melbourne. Students will explore the life of Greeks as Ottoman subjects, as merchants, businesspeople, students and scholars, as victims of genocide, as political exiles and guest-workers. Competing visions of Hellenism that developed in these cities will be juxtaposed to the realities of Greece today. Students who complete the subject should appreciate the complexity of the concept of 'Hellenism' and the diversity of its manifestations in various parts of the modern world, and be able to discuss issues of Greek identity in a sophisticated manner.
