Subject Description

This course is an introduction to modern standard Thai. Students are expected to quickly gain a mastery of the five tones, vowel sounds and regular Thai graphemes. Elementary language related to common situations in daily life is taught and students are made aware of the influence of social factors on the language. Students who complete this subject should have gained a mastery of the five tones in Thai as well as be able to recognise and produce Thai vowels, be able to understand elementary language related to common situations in daily life and have begun cultivating an awareness of social factors in relation to the language covered. Students interested in further studies on this language have opportunities to do so. Five more sequential subjects in Thai language are offered at RMIT University.

Assessment

Oral/aural and written class tests and homework exercises equivalent to 1500 words, a 1000-word cultural assignment, a 10-minute oral/aural test, and a 2-hour examination.
