Subject Description | This subject investigates the performance culture of ancient Greece, with particular emphasis on theatre. It explores the discourse of performance through a range of texts, sites, venues and enactments. These will include the works of dramatists (tragedy and comedy), poets, philosophers and artists, particularly those of the 5th century BC. Of particular importance will be the notion of theatre archaeology in investigating and re-contextualising ancient performance works. The subject will also investigate the performance of 'ancient' theatre in contemporary culture, and engage with both modern and postmodern theories of performance. |
