Subject Description

This subject incorporates a study of dance and movement in contemporary theatrical performance giving attention to different cultural traditions and the pivotal transitions which have led to the evolution of new genres in the 20th century. The emphasis will be on how theatrical ideas and texts are translated into movement and how physicalised theatre and contemporary dance such as Butoh, German Tanztheater and Physical Theatre challenge traditional representational modes. Workshops will investigate the interplay between spoken text and movement.
