Subject Description | The aim of this subject is to consider how planning and housing policy caters to social and economic diversity within the population it serves. No longer able to envisage a unitary 'public interest' for which it regulates and manipulates the built environment, how does planning respond to different 'publics', taking into account cultural diversity, life cycle diversity, and interlocking processes of marginalization and disadvantage? This subject starts by identifying different 'groups' of people, and asks how the process of planning and management response to and represents their lives and needs. Innovative interventions that reflect and respond to diversity will be highlighted, as will international efforts to improve the global urban environment. There will be a particular emphasis on housing policy in this subject, although provision of social, health and educational services will also be covered. |
Assessment | Individual assignments, including oral presentations and written work, of not more than 5000 words. |
