Subject Description

This subject introduces the fundamental processes of identifying requirements for specifying and designing information systems. Students will gain experience in the tools and techniques for all stages of the analysis and design cycle. Topics may include analysis techniques, data modeling, feasibility assessment, process modeling, automated support tools including computer aided software engineering (CASE), database design and specification, prototyping, and systems development methodologies.

At the completion of this subject, students should:

  • understand structured and object-oriented software development;

  • be able to apply appropriate techniques to different stages of software life cycle;

  • have hands-on experience with software development tools for systems analysis and design; and

  • be able to participate in team projects involving analysis and design of medium-scale information systems.

In addition to the subject-related skills, students should acquire or extend other valuable, generic skills. These include:

  • analytical skills that help them structure complex systems into manageable pieces; and

  • team management skills.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination (50%); group project work (50%). Successful completion of this subject requires a pass in both the examination and the practical portion of the assessment.
