Subject Description | The subject provides an introduction to elementary theories of chemical bonding in organic molecules; the stereochemistry of simple organic molecules and application of stereochemical concepts to the understanding of the relation between molecular shape and biological activity; the nature of biologically important molecules and their functions; the nature of chemical equilibrium with particular reference to acid-base chemistry; the chemistry of polymers, metals and inorganic solids; the chemistry of redox processes; and the role of transition metals in life processes. |
Assessment | Three-hour written examination; continuous assessment of practical work; continuous assessment tasks given during the semester (up to 10%). |
