Subject Description

This subject introduces students to the fundamental issues involved in managing organisations. Students will learn about the nature of different types of organizations, commercial, governmental and not-for-profit, and the variety of roles that teams of managers must undertake to bring about the realization of organisational goals. Particular attention will be paid to the creation of sustainable competitive advantage within business organisations. The subject also explores the impact of rapid environmental change, particularly with respect to information technology, on the role of managers and the nature of the organisation. Students will be introduced to the academic literatures and practical implications of such disciplines as organisational studies, human resource management, operations management, marketing and strategic management.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester examination (60%), multiple choice tests (10%) and assignment(s) totalling not more than 2000 words (30%).
