Subject Description

This subject explores Indian philosophical theories concerning the body, time and spirit, introducing some key developments in Indian metaphysical thought. The main emphasis will be on the Hindu philosophical schools, along with Jainism, Buddhism and Tantrism, as well as theistic and narrative traditions, and the Indian sciences of medicine and alchemy. Topics include the philosophical understanding of the human body, and related organic and holistic concepts; the main Indian theories of time, especially those based on the cyclical idea; and the many Indian philosophical movements which sought to transcend the limitations of space and time, by means of the search for transcendental or spiritual essences, such as the atman or essential self. This subject will benefit students doing any course in Asian philosophy, religion or culture, as well as in areas such as feminist philosophy, environmental studies and cultural studies.
