Subject Description | This subject examines conflicts about science in a globalised world, drawing on the sociology of scientific knowledge and theories of 'risk society'. Science produces benefits but at the same time generates risks and uncertainties. Climate change, depletion of the ozone layer, industrial pollution, BSE, and the hazards of gene technology are risks of modernisation and the subjects of globalised conflict and debate. Citizens struggle to understand even the broad outlines, let alone the fine detail, of most scientific debates and frequently respond to science with scepticism, distrust and opposition. The dilemmas generated by science, conflict and globalisation will be examined through several exemplary case studies. |
