This subject covers a period of significant historical transformation in Britain; before, during and after the civil wars of the 1640s. Students will examine the reasons for, and effects of, political tensions between the monarchy, parliament and the law, and the deepening religious tensions that led to the breakdown of government and wars with the Irish and the Scots. The focus of the subject is research into the 'bloody and unnatural' civil wars from 1642 to 1648, which were accompanied by a ferment of popular social, religious and political ideas.
