Subject Description

The subject will explore relations and encounters between Indigenous peoples and European settlers, traders, and governments in Australia and the western Pacific between 1800 and 2003. On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate a general knowledge of the major events in, stages, and inter-relatedness of, the history of colonial relations in Australia and the western Pacific. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the significant structural differences between patterns of colonisation in the region and will develop a critical awareness of the contemporary significance of the colonial past. In particular students will have gained access to Indigenous perspectives as well as, and in relation to, non-Indigenous writing on the major issues and themes of colonisation in Australia and the western Pacific.

Assessment
