Subject Description

This subject introduces students to one of the most significant events of the European renaissance, the German Reformation and its most important proponent, Martin Luther. This subject will primarily highlight Luther's contribution to the development of New High German, the so-called Lutherdeutsch and his role as a translator of the Bible. Since his outlook is rooted in the Middle Ages, there will be an opportunity to examine some of the foremost intellectual movements of late medieval times, the frequent shift of boundaries within Europe, the revival of learning, Copernicus and the return to Greek philosophy as a source of wisdom and enlightenment. In addition, Luther's far-reaching influence on politics, philosophy, literature, art and music will form an important aspect of the subject.

Assessment

A 1000-word classpaper and an essay of 3000 words for 3rd year, 4000 words for 4th year.
