Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to the cultural study of the German nation. Students will be introduced to a range of seminal 19th and 20th century German texts of a political, literary and social nature which cast light on Germany's emergence as a 'cultural nation'. In the process students will encounter different interpretative approaches to cultural studies in German. On completion of the subject students should have an understanding of the cultural, intellectual and social framework that shaped Germany in the period 1945 to 1990. No knowledge of the German language is required.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words.
