Subject Description | This subject is a study of Malay, its linguistic development and the processes of its standardisation into Indonesian and Malay(sian). Selected texts will be used to illustrate the sociohistorical, ethnic and regional variation of Malay. Students who complete the subject should have a general knowledge of the historical development of Malay; be able to recognise different forms of Malay and to translate short passages of non-standard forms of Malay in English; and understand the politics of language standardisation with particular reference to Malay and Indonesian. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year and masters students. |
Prescribed Texts | Selected texts in various forms of Malay will be supplied by the Institute. |
