110-424 Peoples and Languages of Indonesia

Formerly available as 110-087. Students who have completed 110-087 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

Completion of 37.5 points of second/third-year study for third year. Admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in Indonesian or the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in anthropology or Asian studies for fourth year.

This subject includes a survey of the ethnic and linguistic diversity of Indonesia in its Southeast Asian and Oceanic context. Topics include Southeast Asian prehistory, ecology and geography; language change; language variety in social organisation; ritual language and cultural classifications. Students who complete the subject should be equipped with a practical knowledge of problems and possibilities in combining linguistic and anthropological theories and methods, and their complementarity.

Written work totalling 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year, and class participation.
