110-185 Chinese News Analysis, either 110-163 Introductory Chinese 3B or 110-123 Chinese 2B or 110-431 Literature & Film in Contemporary China or equivalent as determined by the coordinator.

As students progress in their language studies, the development of higher level language skills is essential. Students need to be able to understand the language of the modern media, in particular television and radio. This requires aural skills of a very high level and the acquisition of a particular type of vocabulary. This subject seeks to build on the reading abilities and the vocabulary acquired in Chinese News Analysis that focus on written media and extend this to radio and television. This subject will acquaint students with current usage of the Chinese language through the study of contemporary programs. Their language skills will be enhanced by the thorough study of selected programmes of current interests. In particular the study of scripts will increase their ability to understand and use journalistic Chinese

Written work totalling 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year.
