Subject Description | This subject considers a range of international sports and sporting events (including professional boxing, cricket and soccer and the Olympic Games). It examines the means by which traditional cultures of particular sports resist or adapt to the demands of consumer capitalism, analyses the relation between professional sport and other forms of popular entertainment, and examines how international sport operates through intersecting narratives of class, national identity, race, gender and politics. Upon completion of this subject, students will have an understanding of the interplay between sports and sporting events and media and entertainment conglomerates. |
