The Centre for Classics and Archaeology offers a full stream of study in the ancient languages Ancient Greek and Latin, see Latin. Proficiency in both of these languages at the earliest possible stage is highly recommended for those wishing to specialise in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The ancient languages are thus a fundamental part of the major and the honours program in classics and in classical studies and archaeology, see Classical Studies and Archaeology. Both languages are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year. These can commence either at beginners level or the post-VCE stream. The centre also offers a Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages), which runs concurrently with the arts degree see Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages).
The centre offers two streams of Ancient Greek:
Beginners
The beginners stream is available to students who have little or no knowledge of Ancient Greek. It is available to students at any year level, excluding fourth-year honours, although students intending to study Ancient Greek are advised to commence their language study in their first year.
Post-VCE
The post-VCE stream is usually only available to students who have obtained a pass in VCE Ancient Greek, or its approved equivalent.
Students should note that an intermediate sub-stream of Ancient Greek is offered within both the beginners and post-VCE streams. The intermediate sub-stream is offered in alternate years.
The structure of the Ancient Greek streams usually takes the following forms:
