Subject Description | This subject involves a study of the different ways in which sexuality and gender have been represented in cinema (and other related visual practices). Topics to be discussed include the theorisation of the 'gaze'; feminist theories of sexuality and gender; psychoanalytic models of desire, sadomasochism and fetishisation; constructions of masculinity and femininity, heterosexuality and homosexuality in Hollywood cinema and independent film; debates concerning the legitimacy of pornography; discussions of performativity, masquerade and cross-dressing; questions of gay and lesbian visibility; and the emergence and development of 'queer' theory over the last two decades. |
