Subject Description

In this subject we will discuss the management of analytical quality and analytical techniques such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), ion selective electrodes (ISE), polarography and anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in the context of the characterisation and treatment of industrial effluents to achieve desirable environmental outcomes. Industrial processes will centre on the minerals industry and the interaction of toxic contaminants with the natural environment will be discussed. Web-deliverable material will be used to reiterate aspects of the course presented in lectures and tutorials. Upon completion of the subject, students should be able to develop selection criteria for the choice of suitable methods for environmental analyses and apply analytical and problem-solving skills to the consideration of treatment options for industrial effluents.

From the practical component, students should acquire enhanced laboratory skills, skills in planning and time management, teamwork skills, critical thinking skills and report-writing skills.

This subject will provide the student with the opportunity to establish/develop the following generic skills: the ability to use conceptual models to explain observed phenomena, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, a capacity to articulate knowledge and understanding in written presentations and a capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed work.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination at the end of semester (50%). Practical work (50%). Assignments and tests may constitute up to 10% of the final assessment. Satisfactory performance in both theory and practical work is required before credit can be granted for this subject.
