526-326 Projects: Immunology / Biotechnology

• Two options, each with different requirements, are offered. A small number of immunology projects are offered in Summer Semester at a research institute (eg. The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research). The majority of immunology and biotechnology options are offered over the first six weeks in Semester 2 in the Department.

• Students who have been credited for 526-322 and/or 526-323 in any year must contact the coordinators to ensure they are not undertaking the same options for which they were credited.

• Immunology option: 526-324 and an enrolment or pass in 526-305.

• Biotechnology option: 526-301 and 526-321 and an enrolment or pass in 526-302.

• Summer Semester: only for students commencing 300-level study and undertaking either a major in microbiology and /or immunology or for BBiomedSc students in stream 7. Preference will be given to students who have completed 526-201 and 526-221, or 526-201 and 526-205.

Students will carry out experimental work in an area of immunology or microbial or environmental biotechnology.

On completion of the subject, students should:

• appreciate the nature of scientific research, including the way in which progress is made and the realities of laboratory-based work;

• be able to work effectively as a team member in a small scientific project;

• be able to keep clear laboratory notes as experiments progress;

• have developed skills in the design, conduct and interpretation of experiments;

• have developed the expertise to critically evaluate experimental proposals and findings; and

• be able to communicate scientific ideas and findings effectively in both oral and written form.

Laboratory work (15%); a written report of up to 3000 words (70%) and an oral presentation of results (15%).
