Subject Description

A study of the effects of a range of developmental differences commonly found in young children. Anomalies of development will be considered through examination of current understandings of brain behaviour relationships in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, learning disabilities, dyslexia, specific language impairments, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. Further topics may include congenital anomalies, including spina bifida and heart malformations; causes and consequences of intellectual disability; disorders of eating and sleeping; fears, phobias and anxiety; stress, depression and aggression; sensory impairment especially of hearing and vision; and genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis and thalassaemia.

Assessment

Assignment(s) totalling 2000 words, and a 2-hour written examination.
