Subject Description

This subject provides an introduction to the concepts and processes used in distributing information (particularly spatial) and conducting e-commerce over the www.

The focus will be on technical aspects of www-based mapping architectures for distributing spatial information. In addition, both technical and non-technical aspects of e-commerce will be examined. Topics to be covered include the principles of web-based data delivery such as web-mapping concepts, client and server-side strategies, on-line analytical processing (OLAP), streaming vector models, network protocols, CGI, Java and Applets. From an e-commerce perspective topics that will be covered include the principles and use of e-commerce technologies such as XML, automatic identification, www-based clearing houses, e-hubs and e-markets in managing and re-engineering supply chains. In addition, business models for e-commerce including marketing, payment systems, security, privacy and the legal and ethical issues raised by www-based mapping and e-commerce will be discussed.

At the completion of this subject students should have a practical understanding of the Internet and its applications as a business tool; understand the principles of www-based mapping architectures; be aware of the software available for the delivery of www-based spatial data products; understand the role of e-commerce in the spatial data industry; be aware of the security and privacy issues involving e-commerce; and have an understanding that information systems and technology provide an infrastructure for decision support, essential links (intra-organisational networks), and strategic alliances.

Assessment

Not more than three hours of written examinations and tests, and not more than the equivalent of 10,000 words of written assignments and reports on practical work. The relative weighting of the assessment components will be published at the commencement of the subject.
