400-103 Intensive Academic Prep(Special Program)

An IELTS score of at least 6.0 or successful completion of English for Academic Purposes B.

This subject consists of three units of study: Thinking and Learning, Academic Communication and the University Environment. This subject will include further intensive IELTS preparation to enable students to present for the IELTS Test at the end of Semester 3.

Thinking and Learning: Will examine how the engineering discipline defines itself, resolves problems and issues and disseminates knowledge. Students will identify and participate in typical learning processes within the Engineering Faculty; they will present and evaluate the planning for a short research project and present a written critical analysis of writings used in the engineering field. They will also make a critical appraisal of a spoken presentation and use a selected problem-solving model to address a current issue in engineering.

Academic Communication: Students will write a research paper and make an oral presentation typical of graduate assignments on a question relating to an issue in engineering. They will complete a written analysis of an academic paper, prepare outlines and detailed notes on lectures; compile a written literature search for a specific area of study and interact effectively with others in seminars and tutorials.

The University Environment: Students will learn about the University structure (organisationally and geographically), about services available, and develop practical plans to guide them throughout the remainder of the undergraduate program.

IELTS Preparation: Further application of the academic skills learned in the course to the IELTS test format, including test-taking skills and practice tests.

Assessment will be cumulative and will reflect the learning outcomes as described in the curriculum document. Students will present a research paper and a written analysis of an academic paper; make an oral presentation and participate in seminars and tutorials. For students entering the extended Bachelor of Engineering programme with an IELTS score of 5.5, a pass will be contingent upon obtaining an IELTS score of 6.5.
