Twenty-four hours lectures and 36 hours practical work

Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should have an understanding of the principles and policies relating to environmental management systems for sustainable land use; including the legal and institutional processes, and the roles and relationships of land use planning, management plans and codes of practice.

Covered in the subject:

  • principles of sustainable land use and environmental management systems;

  • standards and certification systems, including ISO 14001 and FSC systems;

  • hierarchy of planning and management processes;

  • land use planning;

  • management plans and planning techniques for multiple uses;

  • codes of practice;

  • implementation; and

  • review.

The second-half of the subject on policy will comprise lectures by visiting experts and reading assignments on policy.

Assessment

A three-hour written examination (50%) and two practical reports each up to 1500 (25% each).
