175-016 Semantics

Contact	Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week. There will be no tutorials in weeks one, nine and twelve
Subject Description	This subject is an introduction to the study of meaning, looking at the main linguistic approaches to the study of meaning, techniques of semantic analysis and argumentation, and problems of accounting for some selected areas of linguistic meaning. Topics include classical approaches to meaning, prototype semantics, cognitive linguistics, and linguistic catergorisation across languages.
Assessment	Two written assignments of 750 words each, and a 2500-word essay.
