Usually admission to a masters in gender studies or history. Students completing a postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in history, gender studies, Asian studies or development who wish to enrol should seek approval from the subject coordinator.

Subject Description

This subject examines the relationships between gender, globalisation and development in selected regions of Asia and the Pacific, drawing on the theoretical perspectives and insights of a number of social science and humanities disciplines. On completion of the subject students should have an understanding of problems of writing about gender and differences; debates on modernity and postmodernity; gender, colonialism and postcolonialism; gender, politics, the state and civil society; masculinities, femininities and sexualities; gender and the New International Division of Labour; gender and agrarian change; gender and development agencies; tourism and sexual politics; gender in the 'industrial' and 'post-industrial' orders; and gender and human rights.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
