Subject Description

This subject examines the major changes which took place in western Europe between 400 and 1000 AD. This period of great upheaval saw the decline of the Roman Empire, the migration of new Germanic peoples into the former Empire, and the triumph of Christianity. By 1000 AD many of the distinguishing features of Western society had been established and a new Holy Roman Empire had emerged. Within this broad chronology the course also examines such topics as the legend of King Arthur, Viking culture, monastic life, and illuminated manuscripts. Students should complete the subject with a broad understanding of the institutions and traditions that have helped shape the Western world.
