This subject is a study of the changing forms of Australian citizenship from the colonial occupation to the present times, with particular attention to the creation of the nation state, its modes of government and arguments over the boundaries and meaning of citizenship for indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. The subject will examine issues of human rights and social justice in relation to Australians who faced discrimination on the basis of gender, sexuality, constructions of 'race', migrant and refugee status from the white invasion of 1788 to the incarceration of refugees in the early 21st century.
