This subject deals with the economy, society and political framework of Britain after the Great War: the rise of organised labour, the 'thirties' (the Depression, fascism, impact of the war in Spain), imperial issues and appeasement, WWII and austerity, and finding a role having lost an empire. By the end of the subject, students should have an appreciation of the social, political and economic forces that have shaped Britain's development since the Great War; be able to analyse the substance and impact of ideas such as collectivism; and be aware of the issues raised by Britain's altered world role.

Class participation, and written work totalling 4000 words.
