Subject Description

This subject provides opportunities for students to advance their knowledge of Japanese language. It asks students to look at the language from a researcher's view point. They are encouraged to come up with a simple research question about Japanese language. The question can be directed to Japanese syntax, semantics, vocabulary, or pragmatics as well as learners' Japanese development. Students read relevant academic articles both in English and Japanese and write an essay under the teacher's guidance. They also discuss their research topics and relevant issues in class to narrow and clarify the focus of their research. Students who complete this subject should have deepened their understanding of the Japanese language system and its use. They also should have acquired basic research skills.

Assessment

An essay of 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes.
